The Arconan colonists of Iza Val

Jerrol_Chupapa.jpg
Height: 1.8 to 2.0 m
Skin: Ebony to mahogany to olive
Eye color: Green, pink, or gold.
Lifespan: 100 years.
Language: Arconese, Galactic Basic
Biology: Poor eyesight, with limited infra-vision; keen olfaction. Ammonia intake required.
Society: Females tend to be more reckless & free-spirited than the males; males usually parent.
Notes: Like all Arcona, the colonists are easily addicted to salt (daily use is from 0.5 to 3.0 g, and LD 50 is 25 g). In fact, a camp for salt-addicted Arcona has recently been established on Kashyyyk. Using salt changes eye color to gold. A salt fix will brighten eye color, and salt withdrawal will darken eye color.

Arriving circa 50 BBY, Arcona colonists named this planet Iza Val (“New Home-Nest” in Arconese). Their social organization is based on extended families, comprising 12 to 28 members (40% young), who live together in underground tunnel complexes called nests. The Grand Nest is a common forum, where Arcona gather for trade, government, and social functions. Approximately 50 nests surround the Grand Nest, at a distance of 100 m to 5 km. A head of the family, usually a matriarch, collaboratively leads each nest, and together the nest heads form the Grand Nest governing body, with a single Grand Nest Elder presiding. The current Grand Nest Elder, Shilth Les-heen, is near death, in part due to complications from salt addiction.

The Rain Caves of Iza Val

Iza Val is home to a fungus that causes the subterranean precipitation of ammonia. The fungus grows along the ceilings of caves, where it uses ammonia as a biological enzyme. The metabolic processes of the fungus, which can occur only in complete darkness, cause ammonia gas to become liquid ammonia. Within the large Rain Caves, the fungus is so abundant that the ammonia falls like rain into streams and lakes that form within the trenches and valleys of the caverns.

Ammonia-for-Salt Trade

Nine months ago, Prince Rama Khan and his minions discovered Iza Val, the Rain Caves, and the Arcona colony. Seeing an opportunity for financial gain, Rama Khan established trade with the Arcona. He devised a manual labor process for extracting the liquid ammonia and imported various goods in exchange for the ammonia that the Arcona mined. Initially, Rama Khan’s minions brought water, food, and medicine to the Arcona colonists. Soon, however, they discovered that Arconas could become addicted to salt.

Rama Khan has exploited this weakness, and Arcona colonists now toil day-after-day to mine the ammonia in exchange for the salt upon which their bodies now depend. Each month, Rama Khan’s men come to collect the ammonia and dispense the salt. Landing their 60 – 70 m long star freighter outside of the colony, they deploy bipedal walkers (between 5 and 5 m tall) and speeder transports to ferry containers filled with ammonia from the colony to their ship and to drop off empty ammonia containers for the Arcona miners to fill.

Average Rain Cave shift: 10 hours/day
Average ammonia yield: 0.1 m^3/day/miner
Workforce: ~400 miners
Salt-ammonia exchange rate: 20 g/m^3
